Asian American community in Frederick stresses importance of education

FREDERICK, Md. (DC News Now) — Asian Americans have a dynamic presence in the western Maryland region.

Though schools may be out for the summer, the importance of education in their community does not take a break from the classroom.

Avery Wan is the principal at the CCACC Academy.

“I totally understand the importance of education, for immigrants especially,” Wan said.

Intercultural exchange is important to student, Janice Hu, who is eager to begin her college experience in a few years.

“I would like for people here to learn more about my culture and little bit more about other people,” Hu said.

Elizabeth Chung heads a dynamic western Maryland-based non-profit bridging ties to schools around the county.

“Education is the most important, in our area for Asian families,” Chung said. “Why do we want to come to America? It’s really for the opportunity to have better education, to advance ourselves, to learn new skills.”

Chung said the Asian American community contributes to the prosperity of the region.

“Economic advancement, IT, AI, health workers — all that we brought over here from where we came from and make the greatest contribution to America,” Chung said.
