Major Return Confirmed for I Know What You Did Last Summer Reboot

    Published on

I Know What You Did Last Summer premiered in 1997, and it was a major commercial success, followed by a sequel one year later. In February 2023, Sony Pictures announced the plans for a legacy sequel, and now one major actor will come back.

The 1997 slasher hit starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Freddie Prinze Jr. in the main roles. For the 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Love Hewitt, Prinze Jr. and Muse Watson reprise their roles, as the others were killed off. Now, Deadline confirms Freddie Prinze Jr. will officially return for Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot as Ray Bronson.

When Sony announced the plans for the legacy sequel, both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were reportedly in negotiations to return to the franchise. The outlet confirms that “Hewitt is still very much in negotiations to reprise the role of Julie James.”

Prior to the announcement, Prinze. Jr explained that, “Nothing’s a lock until there’s ink on paper, until the contract’s signed, but I’m definitely talking to them,” he said. “And if we can make everything work — and I know they wanna make everything work, I know I wanna make everything work — then we’ll try and make it work. But we gotta make sure everyone’s schedules fit.”

Hewitt also noted, “If it truly comes together, I don’t even know how I’m gonna feel except extremely overwhelmed and grateful, but it’s wild to think about. It’s nice to know that people are excited at the possibility. I think it would be really fun if it came together.”

I Know What You Did Last Summer Reboot Will Feature New Faces

While Freddie Prinze Jr. will return as Ray, and Hewitt remains in negotiations, there are several actors confirmed to appear in the legacy sequel. Sony is trying to recreate Scream‘s formula, which returned in 2022 with a new cast, combined with the main characters of the original series. Now, I Know What You Did Last Summer will also feature brand-new faces.

Jonah Hauer-King, the prince from The Little Mermaid live-action remake, as well as Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline and Tony Award nominee, Sarah Pidgeon will appear in the upcoming slasher. Riverdale actress Camila Mendes was supposed to star in the revival. However, it clashed with the filming schedule for Amazon’s Masters of the Universe live-action series, where she will play the warrior Teela alongside Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/ He-Man. Because of the schedule conflict, she had to exit I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Director Jenn Kaytin Robinson also confirmed that the sequel will be connected to the original films and will not ignore the sequels. “[I Still Know What You Did Last Summer] is [canon], hope this helps.”

The I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel will premiere on July 18, 2025.
