    Spirit of Hong Kong Awards: tech company creates system to help Asia reach carbon neutrality

    Several Asian countries are among the biggest contributors to global carbon emissions amid an ongoing battle against climate change. But a Hong Kong-based tech company has come up with a tool that focuses on helping those countries move towards carbon neutrality.

    Carbonbase was founded in 2019 under a Cyberport incubation programme to create a system addressing the unique challenges of the region’s biggest emitters – China, India, Indonesia and Japan – by focusing on an Asia-Pacific digital carbon registry.

    The company has been selected as a finalist for the Spirit of Hong Kong Awards in the “sustainability” category.

    Jointly organised by the Post and Sino Group, the annual awards honour remarkable individuals or teams whose efforts might otherwise go unnoticed.

    Carbonbase CEO Max Song said the registry would function similarly to global standards such as Verra or Gold Standard but would be tailored specifically for the region.

    “Asia is responsible for a significant portion of global carbon emissions,” Song said. “Building solutions that work here is crucial if we are to meet global climate targets.”

    One of Carbonbase’s initiatives is the Carbon Neutral Club, created in partnership with WWF Hong Kong.
