Grace Meng will lead congressional Asian caucus – AsAmNews

    Published on

Rep. Grace Meng, who represents New York’s 6th district, will replace Rep. Judy Chu as chairwoman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC).

Chu led the caucus since 2011, according to Northwest Asian Weekly.

“When I came, there were nine AANHPI members of CAPAC. As of this election, with our additions, we’ll have 25, so this is a major accomplishment,” Chu told NBC News. “And I would say that we have fought to be visible and to be part of the leadership of this Democratic caucus, and we have accomplished that.”

Meng — New York’s first Asian American Congress member — is the CPAC’s first vice chair and formerly served the Democratic National Committee. The Democratic congresswoman is running unopposed within the caucus.

In a press release, Meng said it was “an honor to be elected to serve as Chair.”

Of the three minority caucuses in Congress, CAPAC is the smallest compared to the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus — both of which have two-year term limits for their leaders. CAPAC currently does not have term limits.

Chu told NBC that CAPAC is considering implementing term limits for no more than four years, as more members are open to leadership opportunities.
