This casting choice highlights the ongoing efforts to represent diverse talent on one of the world’s most iconic stages.

A New Aladdin Brings Fresh Energy

Roy’s journey with “Aladdin” began when he led the North American tour of the musical starting in the fall of 2022, concluding with a final performance in Costa Mesa, California, on May 12. Roy, also known for his performance in “Jagged Little Pill” on Broadway, brings a rich cultural background and a fresh perspective to the beloved character.

    Production Excellence

“Aladdin” continues to dazzle audiences with its extraordinary production values. The musical expands the original 90-minute film into a two-act theatrical experience, featuring music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and a book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, known for his work on “The Book of Mormon” and “Something Rotten!”, the show remains a visual and auditory spectacle.

The production team includes Tony Award-winning designers such as Bob Crowley (scenic design), Natasha Katz (lighting design), Gregg Barnes (costume design), and Ken Travis (sound design). The magic on stage is further enhanced by illusion designer Jim Steinmeyer, hair designer Josh Marquette, and makeup designer Milagros Medina-Cerdeira. The music supervision and direction are handled by Michael Kosarin, with orchestrations by Danny Troob and dance music arrangements by Glen Kelly.

    A Decade of Enchantment

Since its debut on March 20, 2014, after previews began on February 26, “Aladdin” has been a staple of Broadway. The musical was nominated for five Tony Awards in 2014, including Best Musical, with James Monroe Iglehart winning for his portrayal of the Genie. The show has seen 11 productions across four continents, captivating audiences worldwide.

Adi Roy’s casting as Aladdin not only breathes new life into the production but also symbolizes the inclusive direction in which Broadway is headed. His role as Aladdin is a reminder of the importance of diversity in storytelling and the celebration of different cultures in the performing arts.

For fans and newcomers, “Aladdin” continues to offer a magical experience, now enriched by the diverse talent of its new lead, Adi Roy. As Broadway evolves, it remains a beacon of cultural representation and artistic excellence.
