Advocacy group files lawsuit against Trump’s birthright citizenship executive order – AsAmNews

    Published on

Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC) has filed a new lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting birthright citizenship.

According to a press release, the lawsuit claims that the executive order violates the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the Administrative Procedure Act. It emphasizes that Trump does not have the authority to unilaterally restrict birthright citizenship.

Trump’s executive order would prevent children born in the U.S., without at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, from being automatically granted U.S. citizenship.

AAJC filed the new lawsuit against Trump’s executive order in partnership with Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs (WLC), and OCA -Asian Pacific American Advocates (OCA).

“An attack on birthright citizenship is an attack on everyone born in the U.S., not just our immigrant communities,” John C. Yang, president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC, said in a statement. “This is not the first time that Trump has shown complete disrespect for the U.S. Constitution and rule of law, but the idea that any President believes he can dictate who is and is not an American by the flick of a pen, is not only wrong, it is dangerous.”
