And the 2025 Asian and Asian American Oscar nominees are…

    Published on

After weeks of delays caused by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, the 2025 Oscar nominees have finally been unveiled. Announced early Thursday morning by Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater, the nominations arrive as a testament to resilience in the face of tragedy. The wildfires, which claimed at least 28 lives and destroyed more than 14,000 structures, prompted the Academy to extend the voting window twice, ultimately setting Thursday as the day for the announcements. Demonstrating solidarity, the Academy canceled its nominees luncheon and donated $1 million to wildfire relief efforts, including $250,000 that had been allocated for the event.

Leading this year’s pack is the non-English language film Emilia Pérez, which made history with a record-breaking 13 nominations, surpassing the previous high marks of 10 set by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma.

There is Asian representation to be found in this year’s crop of nominees too. Jon M. Chu’s dazzling adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical Wicked held space as one of the evening’s heavyweights, securing a total of 10 nominations. Among its nods are Best Picture, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande, and a slew of technical categories including Costume Design, Film Editing, Original Score, and Makeup and Hairstyling.

    Anora
, which was co-produced by Samantha Quan, earned six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Original Screenplay for Sean Baker, Best Actress for Mikey Madison and Best Supporting Actor for Yura Borisov.

Global talent also was at the forefront. The Seed of the Sacred Fig from Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof was nominated for International Feature. Black Box Diaries from Japanese journalist Ito Shiori was nominated for Documentary Feature Film. Joining it is the Palestinian Israeli collective project No Other Land. The Animated Short Film category also spotlights Asian creativity, with Magic Candies from Japanese filmmakers Daisuke Nishio and Takashi Washio and In the Shadow of the Cypress from Iranian creators Shirin Sohani and Hossein Molayemi. In Live-Action Short Film, Anuja from producer Mindy Kaling tells the story of a skilled 9-year-old girl working in a garment factory in Delhi, India. Documentary Short Films include I Am Ready, Warden, directed by Smriti Mundhra, and Instruments of a Beating Heart, helmed by Ema Ryan Yamazaki.

The Animated Feature Film category highlights the contributions of Asian voices in major projects. Stephanie Hsu brought charisma to The Wild Robot as the voice of Vontra, while Lauren Patel and Muzz Khan lent their talents to Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. Inside Out 2 features Filipino actress Liza Lapira as the voice of Disgust and Grace Hu as Riley’s friend, Grace. Alien: Romulus and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes received visual effects nominations, showcasing Aileen Wu and Dichen Lachman in their respective casts.

The Oscars ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will air live at 7 p.m. on March 2, from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on ABC and Hulu.
