The death of a 20-year-old student at Dartmouth is being investigated as a possible hazing incident, reports the New Hampshire Union Leader.
Police chief Charles Daniel says his department has received concerns alcohol or hazing may be involved.
Won Jang was last seen at a party near the Dartmouth boathouse on the Connecticut River before police using underwater cameras found him in the river.
According to the Daily Mail, Jang could not swim. Divers found him in waters 20 feet deep and 65 feet from shore. He was a member of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity and had attended a party put on by both Beta and the Alpha Phi sorority, the Dartmouth reported.
A previous article published in January by Dartmouth indicated both Beta Alpha and Alpha Phi had been suspended for violating community standards along with Alpha Chi Alpha and Sigma Nu fraternities. A source told Dartmouth that Beta Alpha’s suspension had something to do with an accident. The other suspensions were reportedly connected to alcohol.
“Won was always an amazing guy. I don’t think there was ever a time when I didn’t see him with a smile on his face,” Kledian Marinaj said to WMUR. “I had just been talking to him to make plans to grab a meal sometime. Of course, I was very upset when I first got the news, so I met up with friends around here, and we went on a walk talking about all the great things about Won, about how he makes jokes and makes people laugh.
A member of the class of 2026, Won majored in biochemical engineering. His profiled described him as “The Won and only.”
‘Won wholeheartedly embraced opportunities at Dartmouth to pursue his academic and personal passions,’ Dean of the College Scott Brown wrote in an email to students.
‘He enthusiastically took part in the Dartmouth community,’
Won worked as an international student mentor, participated in an entrepreneurship program and joined in activities with his fraternity.
