Suhas Subramanyam, Virginia’s first Indian American and first South Asian American Congressman, was officially sworn in.

According to The Center Square, Vice President Kamala Harris swore in Rep. Subramanyam (D-VA) on Friday. He is a part of the 119th Congress.

Subramanyam was born in Houston, Texas, to Indian parents who immigrated to the U.S. from Bengaluru. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Tulane University and his law degree from Northwestern University.

In 2015, then-President Barack Obama appointed Subramanyam to serve as a technology policy advisor.

According to Blue Virginia, Subramanyam released the following statement after being sworn in:

“It’s an honor to be elected to represent our Northern Virginia community in Congress. I’m looking forward to serving all my constituents and championing policies to lower costs and protect our economy in Virginia, keep our community safe and healthy, and ensure that every Virginian can prosper.”
