GRIFFIN — The Griffin Board of Commissioners approved a proclamation at its May 14 meeting naming the month of May 2024, as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Griffin.
Mayor Doug Hollberg read the proclamation, which states in part:
“Whereas, in 1979, Congress designated the week of May 4 as an annual celebration in observance of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Week. The weeklong celebration was extended to the entire month in 1990 by an Act of Congress; and
“Whereas, during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we celebrate and learn about the diverse and tremendous contributions made by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Among their contributions are those made in science, government, politics, the armed forces, medicine, literature, sports and the arts; and,
“Whereas, the history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders is filled with stories of resilience, persistence, and determination, and we value AAPI citizens as an integral part of the fabric of our community; and Whereas, the City of Griffin wishes to pay tribute to the generations of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in our community. This month provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the vibrant culture and innumerable contributions AAPI residents make to our community.
“Now, therefore be it resolved, that the Board of Commissioners of the City of Griffin does hereby proclaim May 2024 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the City of Griffin and urges all citizens to explore AAPI history, culture and accomplishments.”
