Ushering in the Lunar New Year, Chinese American Bear channel The Velvet Underground in new single “Dim Sum (点心),” a psychedelic celebration of Chinese food culture.
The release follows closely behind a 3-month tour across the US, UK and China, during which they released a hugely popular cover of Teresa Teng’s “The Moon Represents My Heart,” racking up 7 editorial playlists from Spotify.
Anne: “Dim Sum is a popular Chinese brunch that’s comprised of a variety of small dishes – different kinds of buns, dumplings, baos, noodles, meats, etc. Growing up, I often went to dim sum with my family on weekends and wanted to write about those fun and yummy memories. As an adult, dim sum is still one of my favorite weekend meals to eat. I personally love the rice noodles and chicken feet haha.”
Bryce: “We wrote this song a while back, but didn’t get around to finishing it until recently. We were definitely channeling The Velvet Underground at the time, with more sugary vibes. My favorite line in the song is at the very end – “Dim sum, ohh dim sum, ohh dim sum, ohhhhh yum… yum.”
Chinese America Bear’s second album Wah!!! is out now via Moshi Moshi and is an accumulation of delicious ear candy songs that have been crafted over the past two years. Written, produced, and mixed by the duo themselves at their home studio in Seattle, the album is full of comedy, groove, quirk, and cuteness, all packed into 11 songs that keeps you smiling the whole way through. With melodically rich instrumentation, bits of psychedelia, and a razor sharp pop sensibility, it’s an endearing release that’s as vital an indie pop record as any released this year.
