Ishiba hangs on as Japan PM, will lead minority government

    Published on

TOKYO — Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Monday was appointed by the parliament to stay on as Japan’s leader, even after his Liberal Democratic Party lost its sole majority in the lower house in last month’s snap general election. He will now lead a minority government.

Both the upper and lower houses of the Diet voted to name him as prime minister. The LDP and its coalition partner Komeito together failed to win enough seats in the Oct. 27 election to secure a majority, but opposition parties could not come together to forge one, either.
