Five years ago in the before times, my Secret Identities partner-in-crime Jerry Ma exhibited a solo art show called A Chinatown Odyssey about a modern interpretation of The Monkey King and his adventures throughout New York’s Chinatown. Well, for this AAPI Heritage Month, Jerry and the Monkey King are back at Pearl River Mart, but this time he’s brought along some legendary comics artist pals for the ride.
Renowned comic book artists Bernard Chang, Sean Chen, Cliff Chiang, Soo Lee, Howard Ma, Jerome Opeña, and Kimberly Wang will have their unique takes on Sun Wukong displayed alongside Jerry’s art at two different New York City locations. The main gallery will be on display at Pearl River Mart from May 1 until August 24, while a second gallery will show at Chelsea Market during AAPI Heritage Month only.
The stunning pieces reimagine The Monkey King as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown landmarks, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts, the Canal Street subway station, a lively dim sum eatery, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant.
Jerry recently took to Instagram to post some behind-the-scenes look at the setup for the art show.
There will be an opening night reception on Thursday, May 1, from 6 to 8 PM, at the Pearl River Mart on Broadway. Click here for more information.
