The 42nd annual Lunar New Year Celebration was presented by the Asian American Coalition of Chicago at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare. The event held on Feb. 22 marked the Year of the Wood Rabbit and brought together 1100 guests in a grand celebration of culture, unity and achievement.
The evening, hosted by the Indonesian American Community, began with a cocktail hour and the viewing of a variety of traditional exhibits that set the stage for a night filled with vibrant performances and cultural showcases. A Javanese Gamelan musical performance was followed by a dramatic Couture Fashion Show, hosted by Marisa Buccheit and featuring designs from NataliaYaya. The festivities took a playful turn with a special appearance by Grimace, McDonald’s iconic purple mascot, that delighted the crowd.
As the doors to the grand ballroom opened, the celebration kicked off with a colorful Malang Flower Carnival Parade and the traditional Ondel Ondel Betawi masks from Indonesia. The procession was accompanied by music from Rieny G’s composition “Untitled March No. 1,” creating a lively atmosphere.
Celebrity presenters, including Joanie Lum, Judy Wang and Ravi Baichwal, introduced key figures from the Chicago media and political scenes. They included Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas and Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle.
One of the night’s highlights was a keynote speech by U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth, who spoke about unity, mutual respect and advocating for a better future for all communities.
The celebration also honored those who have made significant contributions to their communities. Linda Yu, legendary TV broadcaster, received the Pan Asian American Ping Tom Memorial Award, while Illinois State Treasurer Michael W. Frerichs was presented with the Sandra Otaka Memorial Award. The inaugural Asian American Entrepreneurial Award was given to Jae Chul Chang, a leader in the textile industry.
Following the presentations, the Rhythm of One dance company, choreographed by Liah Tehan, captivated the audience. Dancers from various backgrounds performed together, symbolizing the power of unity.
The evening concluded with the Exemplary Community Service Awards and Youth Who Excels Awards presentation. Notable honorees included Johnny Zheng, Katelyn Tran and Maya Agrawal, who were recognized for their exceptional achievements in community service.
As the event wrapped up, Martino Tangkar, 2024-2025 President of AACC, passed the gavel to the 2026 AACC Lunar New Year celebration host, the Chinese American community that was represented by Anne Shaw and Dr. Karen Eng.
The night left everyone with a renewed sense of connection and purpose, celebrating the richness of culture and the strength of the Asian American community in Chicago.
