Meet Thomas Nguyen, The Bachelorette’s first Asian-American contestant: The former Olympic swimming hopeful is making a splash on the ABC show, vying for female lead Jenn Tran’s attention

The show opened to Tran, 26, being introduced to 25 men, all vying for her attention. After two episodes, 10 have already been eliminated. Among the 15 remaining contestants, fellow Vietnamese American Thomas Nguyen is proving himself to be a strong contender.

Here’s what we know about Nguyen.

During their initial conversations, Nguyen and Tran bonded over their shared experiences as the children of immigrant parents. “My mum dropped out of pharmaceutical school to take on another job to sponsor her whole family over from Vietnam,” Nguyen said.

“I’ve watched my parents fight for each other and I want a marriage like that,” he later told the cameras.

Before retiring from the pool, Nguyen was a professional swimmer representing Vietnam. In his introduction video for The Bachelorette, Nguyen revealed that he pursued the 2016 Olympics but was unable to continue after tearing a rotator cuff.

According to his LinkedIn, Nguyen currently works as a retirement specialist and insurance agent.

What has Jenn Tran said about him

During their initial meeting, Nguyen made a great first impression with a pun and a bracelet for her with his surname written on it. “Before I put a ring on it,” he said, “I want to put a bracelet on it with my last name so by the end of the journey, we can turn us into a ‘Nguyen-Nguyen’ situation.”

In an interview with Glamour, Tran shared that her initial conversation with Nguyen was really special to her: “It’s not every day that you get to bond with somebody on your immigrant parents and you get to connect with somebody on that level because not everybody can understand that.”

“That was a really special conversation for me because he really understood where I was coming from and my family means everything to me,” she added.
