Oakland’s Little Saigon mourns after tragic incident – AsAmNews

Oakland’s Little Saigon neighborhood is reeling after a tragic incident that left the co-owner of Best Dim Sum and Pastry dead and an employee injured.

According to NBC Bay Area, the incident began when the suspect reportedly vandalized vehicles near the restaurant. The co-owner and an employee confronted the individual, which escalated into a chase. During the pursuit, the co-owner suffered a fatal heart attack, while the employee sustained injuries after being struck with a blunt object.

As described by ABC7 News, the suspect, identified as an unhoused individual known in the area, was later apprehended by the Oakland Police Department. This incident has further highlighted ongoing concerns about safety and crime in Little Saigon, where business owners have repeatedly called for increased security and law enforcement presence.

Local leaders and merchants have expressed frustration over what they perceive as inadequate resources to protect businesses and residents. One business owner noted, per ABC7 News, “When I close or open, I feel very scared. No safety.”

The tragic loss of a respected community member has sparked renewed conversations about the systemic issues facing Oakland’s Little Saigon, from rising crime to the lack of public safety measures. Community advocates are urging city officials to address these challenges to ensure a safer environment for residents and local businesses alike.
