HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Police say that in recent days, thieves have been targeting victims in part based on their ethnic background.

The New York State Police is alerting residents in Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties of a series of targeted residential burglaries that have taken place within the past week.

Three residential burglaries targeting the homes of Asian American residents have been reported. Significant amounts of cash and jewelry were stolen in two of the incidents. Police say the burglaries seem to be part of a targeted pattern.

State police say they are working closely with local law enforcement agencies to investigate these crimes. Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to contact Troop K Headquarters at (845) 677-7300.

The New York State Police recommend that all residents who live in these areas, especially those in the Asian American community, take additional security precautions:

1. Enhance Home Security
– Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked, including 2nd-floor entry points.
– Install or activate security systems and cameras.
– Keep exterior lights on during nighttime hours.
– Install motion-sensor lighting.
2. Practice Personal Safety
– Be aware of suspicious vehicles or individuals in your neighborhood.
– Avoid discussing vacation plans or periods of absence on social media.
– Consider using timed interior lights when away from home.
– Secure valuables in a quality safe or safety deposit box.
3. Community Vigilance
– Report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 911.
– Document suspicious vehicles, including license plate numbers, when possible.
– Join or create neighborhood watch programs.
– Keep in close communication with neighbors.
