The Curse of Quon Gwon, the earliest known Chinese American feature film, directed by Marion E. Wong in 1916, lights up the Sierra Madre Playhouse’s fabled silver screen on January 31 at 8:00 pm.
Accompanied by live piano, the recently rediscovered silent film tells a poignant story of cultural conflict within a Chinese American family as they navigate Westernization and traditional values. Long thought to be lost, two reels of this groundbreaking film survived and were restored in 2005, earning a place in the National Film Registry for its historical and cultural significance. This is a rare opportunity to experience a significant piece of early Asian American filmmaking. The screening is part of Sierra Madre Playhouse’s multi-week Lunar New Year Festival.
Tickets ($20) are on sale now. For tickets and information, call 626.355.4318 or visit this website.

Many of our advertisers are local businesses that have been impacted directly by the fire. Some suffered extensive damage, while others were completely destroyed, and all have had to close their doors. Out of respect for our community, we immediately removed all advertisements the day after the fire and transformed our site to provide live updates. We felt it would be inappropriate to run ads while our friends, colleagues, and neighbors were being evacuated and displaced.
As residents of the area, we too have been affected; unlike some, we don’t outsource our operations overseas. Our priority has been to keep you and ourselves informed with timely, reliable updates from credible sources.
