This is the fourth year of the event in Riverfront Park. It’s always held in the month of May for Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane’s celebrating Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Thousands of people flocked to Riverfront Park this weekend to take in the celebrations.

The three-day event featured performances, local vendors, and some great food. Spokane United We Stand is the organization putting on the event.

“It shows Spokane that we’re here,” said director of Spokane United We Stand, Charity Doyle. “It’s really exciting to see how the community comes to learn about our culture, our traditions, enjoy our food, enjoy our music.”

This is the organization’s fourth year hosting the event in Riverfront Park. It’s always held in May, for Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month. This year’s event featured more than 40 performers.

“These are the demo team members. So they work extra on performance,” Tommy Salsby, the head instructor at Warhorse Karate said.  “The main goal is to expose it to everybody and all these different variations of everything going on.”

Along with performers, local businesses stunned visitors with their talents.

“Sharing what we love to do. Let people know who we are, that we’re out here,” said the owner of Kamu Ink, Kamu Kamu. “We’re out here to share love with everybody. I see a lot of different islanders over here and not only just for islanders for the whole community, and helping each other out.”

Kamu came from Tacoma just for this event.

More than 20,000 people usually check out the event, which encourages people to learn, eat, and most importantly have fun.

“We’re also teaching not just our culture, but also the historic in the Spokane Asian historical ties,” Doyle said.

Doyle hopes to keep spreading this history for years to come.

To learn more about Asian Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander history in Spokane, Spokane United We Stand says they’ll have a tiny exhibit at the MAC.
