The Bay Area’s golden girl Alysa Liu was honored at Asian Health Service’s Annual Gala in Oakland Saturday night.
Liu made an incredible comeback at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. After winning gold, she said in August she’s taking a break from competition for a year.
“For me, I kind of like to be 100 in something and because I have so many commitments this year, unforeseen commitments and stuff like that, and I want to explore all of them and I don’t like to split my energy and time because it doesn’t fulfill me as much,” Liu said. “So I’m going to do this stuff now and then go back to my regular skating routine next year.”
The Asian Health Services is a health center nationally recognized for its advocacy work on behalf of patients for more than 50 years.
“I think it’s really important because we are such an underserved community and the fact that there’s resources is so helpful,” Liu said.
The organization is located in the city’s Chinatown, a community Liu said helped shape her.
“The Oakland Chinatown community is so important to me. It literally raised me and there’s so many incredible people here,” Liu said. “There’s really good food, there’s really good shops and the community here is really strong. And I love that we help each other.”
The Team USA Figure Skating Champion was among three honorees that also included Shannon Lee, the daughter of Bruce Lee, and Hudson Yang, an actor, chef and mental health advocate.
