UBS: El Niño Phenomenon Will Influence Asian Economy and Markets, Focus on Three Key Topics and Trends

“`htmlGolden Ten Data July 28|The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts an 81% chance of a strong El Niño event occurring between October and December this year, with the possibility of it becoming one of the most significant El Niño events since records began in 1950. UBS Asia Pacific Research Director Pei-kun Lian believes that the El Niño phenomenon is gradually becoming an important factor affecting Asia’s macroeconomy and could influence inflation, policy direction, and market performance. He stated: “According to our research, the El Niño phenomenon is likely to persist until mid-2026, and may even extend into 2027. Given Asia’s sensitivity to agricultural and monsoon changes, along with the high weight of food in inflation, the relevant impacts are often more pronounced than in other regions.” UBS believes that as climate fluctuations intensify, companies with pricing power and structural growth support often demonstrate higher resilience, and highlights three major focus themes and trends: (1) Technology and Artificial Intelligence: UBS maintains a positive outlook on related topics, considering that the investment cycle driven by Artificial Intelligence is expected to continue and the related development prospects are worth watching; (2) Energy Transition: With increasing energy demand and greater need for climate adaptation, fields such as renewable energy, grid infrastructure and utilities are expected to play a more important role and benefit from the transition process; (3) Selected consumer sectors: Local consumption, tourism, and experiential consumption are expected to continue to be supported by consumption upgrades and structural trends.“`
