LINCOLN — Gov. Jim Pillen appointed 13 of the 14 members who will make up Nebraska’s new Asian-American Affairs Commission, his office announced Monday.

The commission was established through the passage of Legislative Bill 1300 this year. The measure was originally proposed by State Sen. Rita Sanders of Bellevue, the only sitting member of the Nebraska Legislature of Asian heritage.

The commission will coordinate programs related to Nebraska’s Asian American community for housing, education, welfare, employment, among other issues, according to a state press release. Members will serve four-year terms, and will be overseen by a chairperson and four other executive board members.

The commission will make one final appointment to bring it to its full 14-member slate, the release said.

Among the newly announced members is the chancellor of University of Nebraska at Omaha, a former FBI agent, a heart surgeon and the founder of a Japanese performance group.
