Niagara Region Public Health has confirmed the presence of an “Asian tiger mosquito” in the region.

Officials say they have confirmed just one of the insect — also known as the Aedes albopictus mosquito — in Lincoln.

They say the insect tested negative for mosquito-borne viruses, though the species is capable of transmitting West Nile, dengue, Chikungunya and Zika.

Niagara Region Public Health says this kind of mosquito are also considered “aggressive daytime biters.”

Officials warn residents to wear bug repellent with DEET in insect-prone areas and to keep your property free of standing water.
