Grammys to add best Asian pop music performance category in 2027

The Grammy Awards announced Tuesday that a best Asian pop music performance category will be added in 2027.

In a statement posted on the Grammy website, the Recording Academy said the award “recognizes artistic excellence in Asian pop music performances originating from or widely recognized within Asian markets, including but not limited to K-pop, J-pop and C-pop, with meaningful use of one or more Asian languages.”

The category was one of five new additions to the awards lineup, which will also introduce awards for best Latin song, best R&B collaboration or duo/group performance, best traditional pop vocal performance and best traditional folk album.

The new Asia category gives Japanese musicians a greater opportunity to be recognized by the Grammys, which will hold their 69th ceremony on Feb. 7, 2027.

“Asian pop music is one of the most significant and sustained forces in the global music industry. Its impact is well-established, and it continues to grow and shape music culture around the world,” Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said in a statement.

A handful of Japanese artists have won Grammys in the past, including Ryuichi Sakamoto for his work on the soundtrack to “The Last Emperor” in 1987 and Takahiro Matsumoto of rock band B’z for his instrumental pop album with guitarist Larry Carlton in 2011.

At this year’s Grammy Awards, “Golden” by the group Huntr/x, which was featured in Netflix’s “KPop Demon Hunters,” won best song written for visual media, becoming the first work associated with K-pop to win at the event.

Alongside continued global interest in K-pop, the best Asian pop music performance award arrives as J-pop has garnered more international attention. In May, the Zipangu festival in Los Angeles drew 20,000 attendees to an event devoted to contemporary Japanese music. Last weekend, the second edition of the Music Awards Japan was held at Toyota Arena Tokyo, highlighting Japan’s domestic music industry through a program modeled on major international awards shows.
