US-sanctioned Chinese tanker crosses Hormuz despite American blockade

    Published on

A US-sanctioned Chinese tanker has passed through the Strait of Hormuz despite a naval blockade imposed by Donald Trump, raising questions over the enforcement of the restrictions.

According to a Bloomberg report, the tanker Rich Starry, previously known as Full Star, navigated the strategic waterway on Tuesday. The vessel had been blacklisted by the United States in 2023 for helping Iran evade energy sanctions.

Shipping data showed the tanker made a second attempt within 24 hours. It initially approached waters near Iran’s Qeshm Island soon after the blockade began, turned back, and later resumed its journey. During transit, the vessel broadcast details of its Chinese ownership and crew.

The development comes as the US blockade, announced on Monday, aims to curb Iran’s oil exports amid ongoing tensions. The move has created uncertainty across global shipping and energy markets, with several firms reportedly pausing operations.

Reports indicated that no vessels with active transponders had entered the Persian Gulf since the blockade took effect, highlighting the cautious approach taken by most shipping operators.

Another tanker, Elpis, also came under scrutiny after entering the Gulf of Oman via the Strait. Tracking data suggested it had previously docked at an Iranian port.

The situation has raised concerns among Asian economies dependent on Middle Eastern oil supplies. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for renewed diplomatic efforts, urging dialogue between Washington and Tehran.

The Rich Starry is reported to be sailing under a Malawi flag, though authorities in the African nation said they do not maintain a registry for oceangoing vessels. Ownership records link the tanker to a Shanghai-based company that is also under US sanctions.
